The University of Westminster

By Natsuko, Kosuke

Introduction
We would like to introduce you to the University of Westminster, which  is the university you will go to when you arrive in London.  The university was founded in 1838 as the Royal polytechnic institution, where you could study technical or scientific subject.  It’s one of the oldest higher educational institutions in UK.  They have nine top rated subjects with four internationally renowned research centres. They have many research centres. Especially communications, cultural, media studies research and Art and Design research is ranked higher in some researches.  Though we wish we could introduce everything about the university, we picked two topics: the location and the clubs.  We hope the information will be useful for you and make you excited about coming here.

The locations of the university

Studying at the University of Westminster means that everything that London has to offer is on your doorstep.  As a Westminster student, you will have access to all our sites and facilities, including cafes and restaurants, libraries, Students’ Union shops, bookshops, bookshops and student services.  They have four campuses, three are in centre of London and the other is in Harrow.  One of three campuses, you will go to first three month is at 309 Regent Street.  I’d like to explain how centre of London it is located!  Regent Street is a big street and run through the big shopping area called West End.  I think the area is like a city mixed Ginza and Harajuku in Japan. It’s very fashionable area.  There are many popular shops like Top shop and H & M.  Oxford Circus, the station near the campus has three lines: central Line, Victoria Line and Bakerloo Line. It is easily accessible from everywhere in London.  And the other two campuses: Cavendish and Marylebone are also around West End. We can walk to there from 309 Regent Street.  The forth campus located at Harrow, Which is just 20 minutes by Tube from central London.  Usually the students studying media, art and design work go to there.  The nearest Tube station to Harrow is Northwick Park.  They have not only four campuses, but also more attractive facilities.  There are four libraries, each campus.  You can go to there any time you want in Marylebone and Harrow.  Even the others are closed at 11 o.  So I think the libraries would be useful for you here.  You would  know how important these locations are after coming here!

The Clubs , societies, and extracurricular activities
The University of Westminster has a students’ union, or UWSU. It is a fantastic organisation for us and provides us a lot of things.  In the website, their mission is written
UWSU works in the interests of University of Westminster students to enrich their lives.” ( http://www.uwsu.com/content/477793/about_us/  , 12/04/2011)
We belong to the union when we enter the university automatically. Their work is to keep us in the know, to represent our views, to offer activities and opportunities, and to provide advice and help. And they have bars and shops, as well! You should use them when you come to the University of Westminster.
They have a lot of sports clubs. You can see what kind of clubs there are in the website: (http://uwsu.com/). If you want to play football, you can join to the football team of UWSU. It is easy to join them by sending e-mail. Also there are many societies like a drama society or a break dance society. You can get great experience and many friends who have the same interests of you. At first you are bad at using English, but if you can make friends in the clubs and societies, you can improve your English soon. There are about 70 clubs and societies, so I am sure that you can find a club which matches your interest.

Also, except the UWSU, you can find places where you can do what you want to do. If you want to volunteer, there are many opportunities in the UK. The UK is the beginning country of volunteer, so you can do various activities. For example in the Japan society of the UK you can teach children calligraphy calling “shodo” in Japanese. Please research them by yourself.

Conclusion
In the University of Westminster you can enjoy so many things. There are beautiful buildings in the centre of London, and many clubs and societies. You can study what you want to know, join the clubs and after school go around the London!
